The men and women were taken out of their homes with less supply of food and water and were herded into makeshift forts and made to walk through thousands of miles towards the west. Army had direct order to compromise any resistance in whatever way they deem possible. It was like the army was fighting against any other country but not their own. The people were dying with the extreme conditions and John Ross, leader of Cherokee tribe appealed the General to allow them to move in small groups so that the deaths could be minimized. Ross divided the tribe in many small groups and made them to move separately. The Indians reached Oklahoma in brutal winter situation but this still helped them in minimizing the death toll which was increased to 4000 from the total of 15000 (Remini, 2001). This event of distress is marked as the Trail of Tears in the history of America and the Indians themselves stated this event as The Trail Where They Cried.
The removal was not limited to Georgia but it was against the whole Indian community. The other tribes including Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee-Creek and Seminole were all disgraced and were forced to leave their lands and homes where they had been living for many generations.
